From Pity to Progress – New Documentary Spotlights the ADA

April 2, 2025

“Change, Not Charity: The Americans with Disabilities Act” premiered on “American Experience” on PBS last week, offering a fresh perspective on the efforts to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Directed by Jim LeBrecht and narrated by Peter Dinklage, the documentary highlights the achievements of the disability rights movement, shifting the narrative from pity to progress.

LeBrecht uses archival footage and interviews with advocates to document the grassroots efforts that led to the ADA, mandating curb cuts, ramps, and other accessibility improvements for people with disabilities.

“I think the message of this film is that civil rights for people with disabilities are just as important as the rights that everyone either has or should have in our society,” said LeBrecht.
