“Functional Electrical Stimulation”
New Model Systems Factsheet

January 2, 2025

The Model System Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) has released an updated factsheet on Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). FES delivers small electrical pulses to weak muscles, helping people with spinal cord injuries stimulate movements like walking, grasping, and cycling. It’s frequently used in physical and occupational therapy to improve muscle strength and control and can be integrated into exercise programs. Various FES devices target specific muscle groups for various activities.

Direct benefits of FES may include:

  • Maintaining or improving the size of stimulated muscles and muscles near the stimulated muscles.
  • Maintaining or improving the strength of your stimulated muscles.
  • Improving the ability to control movements that have been practiced.
  • Improving blood circulation.
  • Reducing spasticity in stimulated and nearby muscles.
