New Children’s Book Aims to Normalize Conversations About Disability

September 4, 2024

“Kevin Can!” is a new children’s book about disability. Co-written by childhood friends and wheelchair users Ian Michael Flanagan and Jesse Lindlbauer, it follows 10-year-old Kevin as he embarks on wheelchair adventures with his best friend, Katie.

The inspiration for the book traces back to Flanagan and Lindlbauer’s teenage years, when they often hung out at the mall and faced frequent questions about their wheelchairs. They realized that there were many misconceptions about wheelchair users and decided to do something about it.

Featuring lively storytelling and illustrations, the book aims to normalize conversations about disabilities. Flanagan and Lindlbauer hope to see Kevin Can! in libraries across the country, spreading its message of inclusivity and understanding.
