A recent episode of CBS Chicago’s Miracle Shots: The Voices of Gunshot Survivors follows coach Jorge Alfaro and the Chicago Hornets as they pursue a spot in the NWBA National Championship Series. Along the way, it highlights how the program has become a supportive community that helps gunshot survivors living with spinal cord injuries rebuild confidence and find purpose.
Five years after Alfaro was accidentally shot at age 9, he discovered wheelchair basketball at what is now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, which co-sponsors the Chicago Hornets with the Chicago Park District. His coaching style is direct and demanding: “When they’re in the gym, something matters more than just how they got shot,” says Alfaro. “Their game matters. How I play matters. What I do in life matters.”
