For people with spinal cord injuries, what we do is we work on strengthening. I think strengthening can take on many forms: we can work on upper-body strengthening, lower-body strengthening and we do this as it relates to helping people move around better. So we’ll work on teaching people how to do transfers from surface to surface, we’ll teach people how to get in and out of cars, we’ll teach people how to take care of themselves, and be able to sit and, in some cases, stand and walk. Most people think that physical therapy is the profession of walking again, and in a lot of cases it can be. Sometimes it’s not, and that’s when we can go through more things like advanced wheelchair skills and teaching people how to be independent and mobile at the wheelchair level.
