Pressure sores disrupt, and can destroy, the skin and the underlying vital tissues. The depth of the sore can all the way to muscle and then to bone. This allows entrance of bacteria with subsequent infection. In the worst case scenario, a patient can develop a bone infection, which we call osteomyelitis. They can also develop sepsis, which can cause shock and death.
