What are the signs of depression that parents should know?

There are a variety of different signs that parents can start to look for if they think that their child may not be doing well. We certainly look at things like sleep disturbances, children who are sleeping more than they usually did— maybe having night terrors or issues during the night sleeping. Kids who don't want to do the things they used to do, all of a sudden aren't participating with their peers the way they used to, don't have an interest in contacting friends, or being with friends after school, or in other activities that they normally would have been interested in. Children who start to seem like they are little more withdrawn or parents can tell that their personality is changing a bit. It's important to look at those things, and find what's going on with your child, and then make sure that you seek appropriate professional assistance.
