Opening An Eye On Disability

Nancy Root felt “radioactive” after she started using a wheelchair. Old friends have disappeared, people avoid eye contact, or don’t acknowledge her presence —even doctors. She was the same smart, interesting woman she had always been, but suddenly felt she had become a symbol of the fear of what it meant to use a wheelchair.

The fear that drives people to “edit” disability out of their realities is exposed by Frank Bruni’s in his recent Op-Ed for the New York Times. After meeting Root earlier this year, he became aware of how widespread this issue is, and asks readers to face it. Read Article
